With the start of the holiday season, we’re starting to see a lot of traditional holiday foods showing up on our San Francisco Food Tour of North Beach\Little Italy and Chinatown. From turkey and ham, to pork and duck, from butternut squash to pumpkin, every neighborhood is getting into the holiday season.
In North Beach\Little Italy, things tend to get roasted. In Chinatown, things tend to get sautéed or show up in soups. The San Francisco thing is that both neighborhoods end with Dungeness crab. Dungeness Crab is one of our local favorites. It usually shows up around November 15 and stays arounds until March and April. For whatever reason, it seems like it is sweeter this time of year, right after it shows up. It could be because it is sweeter. It could be because we miss having the rest of year and we’re craving it.
On our San Francisco Food Tours, eating seasonally is a passion of ours. Not having something available year-round seems to make it better when it comes into season. It becomes more of a treat. I think that if we could have it year-round that it would not be as special. Maybe that is why that it tastes so good, either because it does or just because we can’t have at other times of the year. Either way, those seasonal foods taste great. And, it’s even more fun when we enjoy them on our tours.
