When I’m at home from our San Francisco Food Tour of North Beach\Little Italy and Chinatown, there are some days that I don’t want something very heavy for dinner. At those times, a nice salad really hits the spot. For me, the great thing about a salad is that it can be a great combination of almost anything that I like. I like to start off with something like spinach or arugula and add some grilled vegetables. With just a few additions, such as olive oil and lemon juice, it makes for a nice dinner.
On our San Francisco Food Tours, salads can almost anything from grilled vegetables to grilled chicken or meats or even seafood. At home, I tend to do the same thing. For example, I got some nice salmon and just sautéed it and added to the salad. In my case, I’m a big fan of tomatoes, so I tend to use any excuse to add tomatoes to anything. I just like to cut them and toss them with the salad. The one thing I don’t to do is cover things with heavy salad dressing. I like to really to taste the ingredients in my salads. If the ingredients are fresh, the last thing I like to do cover up the flavor. I just like to have the flavors speak for themselves.
