It the Fourth of July, a time that Americans celebrate the founding of our country.  On our San Francisco Food Tours, it’s a time to reflect what being an American means. In one way, our San Francisco Food Tour of North Beach\Little Italy and our San Francisco Food Tour of Chinatown illustrate it.

Americans may be different than most countries.  You can’t look at someone and tell by his or her appearance that they are American.  We don’t look the same, we don’t all practice the same religion, and very few of us don’t trace of family history back to a different country.  So on today, we have been reflecting on our San Francisco Food Tours what being an American means.  Whether we are on our San Francisco Food Tour of North Beach\Little Italy or our San Francisco Food Tour of Chinatown.

We think that being an American means striving to live up a set of ideals.  We don’t always achieve them, however it is our pursuit of those ideals that make us an American.  It is the belief that every time another group is achieving civil rights, all of us are freer.  Whether it is by sex, age, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, or religion or other personal characteristics, every time that another group obtains civil rights, we as Americans are freer. It is the realization that anyone who suggests otherwise, they are suggesting something that it is the opposite of what being an American is all about.  Being an American means standing up for the people who are least able to stand up themselves.   In short, it is our ideals that make us Americans.

We don’t achieve always it, and it still a work in progress, however on our San Francisco Food Tours, we realize that being an American means standing up for the civil and human rights of everyone else.

On our San Francisco Food Tour of North Beach\Little Italy and our San Francisco Food Tour of Chinatown, it is the diversify of neighborhoods that illustrates what being an American is all about, we may not all come from the same backgrounds, however we all share the same ideals.
