Being Wintertime, it’s that time of year for comfort foods.

On our San Francisco Food Tour of North Beach\Little Italy and Chinatown, it’s always interesting to see what each neighborhood considers to be comfort food.  In North Beach\Little Italy, it tends be things like pasta and Italian stews.  In Chinatown, it tends to be dumplings and noodle-based dishes.  In both neighborhoods, soups are a year-round comfort food.  Even at home, soups tend to rank high on my comfort food list.

On our San Francisco Food Tours, it’s always great to see how different neighborhoods and different people enjoy similar things, like comfort foods.   It’s interesting how regardless of the neighborhood, soup is always a great comfort food. Maybe it’s the warmth of the soup, maybe it reminds of an earlier time in our life, or maybe it’s something else.  Whatever it is, it’s a great comfort food.

Some people like more clear broth soups, like egg flower or won ton soup and some people like more creamy soups, like butternut squash soup or carrot ginger soup.  I’m one of the people who likes a more creamy soup, however I like one thickened by either reducing the soup or on that is more thickened by the type of ingredient used, such as the way that butternut squash, when its’ pureed it becomes creamy on its own.  Either way, it’s one of those things that I just like to relax and feel comfortable with.  The perfect comfort food.
