Oatmeal

MAR
212016

While I’m cooking at home from our San Francisco Food Tour of North Beach\Little Italy Chinatown, sometimes I really like having a something special for breakfast. It can be as simple as steal cut oatmeal.  It has a great nutty flavor. An easy way to make steal cut oatmeal is in a slow cooker.  I use about a cup of steal ground oatmeal  and about four cups of water overnight on low in a slow cooker.  In the morning, it’s ready.  If I want regular (old fashioned or rolled), it’s as simple as two cups of water and a cup oatmeal for three minutes in the microwave.  However, I make it, whether is steal cut, rolled, or old fashioned, if you let it cool down after you make it, it firms up and the texture is much better. It’s much better than if you try to eat right after it’s made.  When it first comes out of the microwave or the slow cooker, it can be a little watery.  After it cools down, it firms up quite a bit.  I like to add a little fruit, fresh or dried and it’s the perfect breakfast.

On our San Francisco Food Tours, everyone has a different favorite food for breakfast.  For some people, it’s the perfect pastry.  For others, it can be some kind of porridge.  Either way, enjoying your favorite breakfast food is a nice way to treat yourself in the morning.
