It is a couple days before Thanksgiving and we’re getting ready on our San Francisco Food Tours. From special foods to special surprises, it is a really fun time on our tours. In North Beach\Little Italy, the additions for this time of year are a great addition. In North Beach\Little Italy, seeing the gingerbread houses are really incredible. Each of the gingerbread houses is handmade. Each of the gingerbread houses is unique. We only find them this time of year, so it really is a once a year event. It is also great time to give someone one of a San Francisco Gift Certificate.

Chinatown has some special additions for Thanksgiving. Being Dungeness crab season, we’re seeing it all throughout the markets in Chinatown. For San Franciscans, Dungeness crab is a holiday tradition. While most of the country has turkey, Dungeness crab is a San Francisco tradition.

Dungeness Crab is only found in the Pacific Northwest. It is a very sweet crab. We tend to eat by steaming it and eating without anything else on it. The good news is that in the 1890’s California passed a law that made it illegal to catch female or small crabs. The result has been the Dungeness crab has become very sustainable seafood. The great thing is being to enjoy a delicious type of seafood that is also sustainable. The result is that we can enjoy Dungeness crab and feel very good about it at the same time. Given that many areas of the world are losing their fisheries, sustainability is a very important idea. Either one does that or at some time in the future, there are no fisheries.
